Congo Football Federation President Sentenced to Life Over FIFA Funds Scandal

A court in Brazzaville, capital of the Republic of the Congo, has sentenced Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, president of the national football federation, to life imprisonment in a major corruption case involving international football funding.

Mayolas, who led the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT), was convicted of embezzling more than $1 million in development funds provided by FIFA.

Prosecutors said the funds were intended to support football development projects in the country, including programs to expand women’s football and improve sports infrastructure.

Investigators alleged that the money was diverted through fraudulent financial transactions and falsified documents for personal gain.

The court delivered the verdict after months of investigation into financial records and federation operations.

Mayolas was tried in absentia after failing to appear in court during the proceedings, and authorities say his current whereabouts remain unknown.

Several other officials linked to the federation were also convicted in the case. The federation’s secretary-general Badji Mombo Wantete and treasurer Raoul Kanda were each sentenced to five years in prison for their roles in the financial irregularities.

Prosecutors described the case as one of the most significant corruption scandals in the history of football administration in the country.

Authorities say the ruling sends a strong message about accountability in the management of sports funds.
